Australia beat India by nine wickets in the third Test at Indore to book their place in June’s World Test Championship final.

Chasing 76 to win, Travis Head hit 49 not out and Marence Lebuschgen scored an unbeaten 28 as the tourists cruised to victory before lunch on day three.

Usman Khawaja was caught behind off the second ball but Head and Libeschen shared an unbeaten stand of 78 to see them home.

They will face either India or Sri Lanka in the final at the London Oval.

India will book their place if they beat Australia in the fourth and final Test of the series starting March 9 in Ahmedabad.

However, draw or defeat, Sri Lanka will look to qualify instead as they beat New Zealand 2-0 in their two-Test series, which starts on March 8 at 22:00 GMT. .

The World Test Championship final will be played between June 7 and 11 – a week before Australia take on England in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

India currently leads the four-Test series 2-1 after big wins in the first two matches.

After dismissing India for 109 on the first day, Australia dominated the third Test, eventually building an 88-run lead in the first innings.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon then took 8-64 in the second innings to give his side a comfortable chase.

“It was a complete performance in the end,” said Steve Smith, who captained Australia alongside Pat Cummins in Australia with his ailing mother.

“We are really proud to have made it to the final but for us it is about playing really good cricket.

“The way we’ve come back here and played our style for longer than in the first two Tests, hopefully we can put in a similar performance and finish the series really well.”

Lyon, who now has a record 113 Test wickets against India, added: “It’s been a very remarkable Test series but to come out and put in a really good team performance is something I’m really proud of. “

Indian captain Rohit Sharma said: “We need to regroup and realize what we did right in the first two Tests and no matter what the pitches are you have to come out and do your job.

“On challenging pitches you need to be brave.”

The Holkar Cricket Stadium’s pitch has been declared poor by the International Cricket Council and the venue has been awarded three demerit points.

If a venue accumulates five or more demerit points in a five-year period, it will be banned from hosting any international cricket for 12 months.

“The pitch, which was very dry, did not provide a balance between bat and ball, which favored the spinners from the start,” said ICC match referee Chris Broad.

“The fifth ball of the match broke the surface of the pitch and continued to break the surface at times with little or no seam movement and excessive and uneven bounce throughout the match.”
