The Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, and Los Angeles Clippers have been in talks to add Kristaps Porzingis, Malcolm Brogdon, and Marcus Morris in an intriguing three-way trade scenario.
The potential deal has gained momentum just before the 2023 NBA draft.
The Celtics, aiming to bolster their frontcourt depth, are reportedly interested in acquiring Porzingis, the 7-foot-3 big man from Washington. Sources say Boston head coach Brad Stevens is exploring the possibility of a trade. Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reports that the Celtics and Wizards are discussing a possible framework for a trade.
“The Celtics are pursuing Kristaps Porzingis from the Wizards in a potential opt-in and trade deal,” Charania said. “I’m told Washington and Boston are discussing a possible framework as Porzingis makes a decision on his $36 million player option for next season.”
The Wizards, in the midst of a rebuild after trading away Bradley Beal, are likely looking for young players and draft picks for Porzingis. However, since the Celtics lack both assets, a third team may need to be added to facilitate the deal.
Additionally, the Clippers have entered the mix by expressing interest in Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon. JEE News have reported that Boston has also explored a trade for Phoenix Suns center DeAndre Ayton. These developments indicate the Celtics’ active pursuit of roster upgrades.
If the trade comes to fruition, Porzingis would bring much-needed balance to the Celtics’ guard-heavy roster. The Latvian forward enjoyed a strong season with the Wizards, averaging 23.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Additionally, his improved shooting percentage from the field and beyond the arc make him an attractive target for Boston.
As negotiations progress, it remains to be seen how Porzingis will fit in with Celtics big men Robert Williams and Al Horford. A potential trade would allow Boston to evaluate Jaylen Brown’s compatibility before making a decision on his future supermax contract.
Trade talks highlight the evolving landscape of the NBA offseason, with teams actively exploring player trades and trying to improve their rosters. Fans are eagerly awaiting the results of these debates as the NBA draft approaches.
