Popular thespian Zia Mohyeddin, known as a legend in his lifetime, breathed his last at the age of 92 in Karachi, reported JEE News.
Earlier, sources at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) said that Mohyeddin has been admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital.
Mohyeddin, founder and chief executive of NAPA, was promoted to its president emeritus last year.
The late British-Pakistani, known for his excellent compere, broadcasting, poetry and prose recitation and acting and theater direction, mentored hundreds of students.
Born on June 20, 1931 in Faisalabad, Mohyeddin graduated from Government College, Lahore. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and on his return to Pakistan produced, directed and acted in several plays.
In 1962, he had a memorable role in the film Lawrence of Arabia with director David Lean, followed by 1964 in Behold the Pale Horse with director Fred Zinman, and later in 1992 with director Jameel Dehlavi in Immaculate Conception.
Although the late actor was known for his extensive work in British television, his Lollywood debut in 1970’s Criminal Who, despite a good story and soundtrack, was not a success.
In 1970, he came to Pakistan and presented the now famous Zia Mohyeddin Show on PTV. Later he accepted the post of Director at PIA Arts Academy.
In 2005, Mohyeddin established NAPA in Karachi. In 2012, he was awarded Hilal Imtiaz for Art.
He is also the author of three books: A Carrot A Carrot, Theatrics and The God of My Idolary Memories and Reflections.
The funeral prayer of the deceased will be offered today after Zuhr prayer at Imam Bargah Yasarb located in Defense Housing Authority Phase 4.
