Jurgen Klopp will pick “extraordinary” Trent Alexander-Arnold in any team after the full-back was overlooked by England manager Gareth Southgate.

The 23-year-old Liverpool defender did not feature against Italy and was left out of the squad for the draw with Germany.

Reds boss Klopp says there is “room for improvement” in Alexander-Arnold’s defensive game, but his attacking ability is “very limited”.

“I would obviously decide differently, but I’m not in charge,” Klopp said.

“My point of view, it’s an easy choice. Whatever team I’m coaching at the moment, I’ll sign him because he’s exceptional.”

Southgate has said he feels Alexander-Arnold’s “all-round game” is behind right-back rival Kieran Trippier.

Alexander-Arnold, who missed last year’s European Championships through injury, has only played one international game this year.

He has been a key player in a Liverpool side that has won the Premier League and the Champions League in recent years, but has struggled to transfer that form to international football and has only made one appearance since his 2018 debut. 17 caps won.

“There are stories all the time that talk about him and say he’s not a good defender, but that’s not true,” Klopp said.

“A world-class talent is judged by the fact that he’s not world-class like other things. If he wasn’t a good defender, he wouldn’t be playing.

“The ability he has to be effective in possession is crazy for a right-back.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a right back like that – passing here, passing there, switching sides, taking free kicks, corners, smart decisions, quick decisions.

“He is a great football player in a situation where three other right-wings in this country are doing really well. We must not forget that.

“So the theory on this is how impactful can Trent be? That’s number one. What is he good at? That’s how you judge a player.”
