Murtaza Wahab elected as Mayor of Karachi of People’s Party

PPP Sindh President Nisar Ahmad Khoro announced on Monday that Sindh Government Spokesperson Murtaza Wahab has been selected as the candidate for Mayor of Karachi by the ruling Pakistan People’s Party.

Elections for the post of Karachi mayor are scheduled for June 15, as the PPP emerged as the single largest party with 155 members including reserved seats in the 367-member house.

Currently, no single party has a simple majority in the House of 179 votes, the tally needed to determine who wins the coveted seat of mayor of the port city. According to the latest statistics, the total number of PPP, Muslim League-N and JUI(F) is 175.

On the other hand, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has emerged as the second largest party with a total of 130 seats including reserved seats, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has won a total of 63 seats. The alliance between the two parties stands at 193.

Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said that there is no pressure on anyone, but if someone decides to vote according to their conscience, they will respect their decision.

Along with announcing the candidates for mayor and deputy, the People’s Party also released the list of candidates for the posts of chairman and vice chairman in 13 towns of the mega city.

According to the details, the ruling party of the province has finalized the name of Salman Abdullah Murad for the Deputy Mayor of Karachi.

Meanwhile, People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari congratulated all the nominated candidates of his party and said that the people have shown confidence in his party.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: “Now let’s win the next round and get on with what we do best, serving the people.”

The PPP leader thanked the people of Karachi and Hyderabad for trusting us for the first time.

He added that I am sure that Mr. Shoro and Mr. Wahab will be not the first but the last PPP mayors of our two great cities.

Reacting to his tweet, Wahab said he had no words to thank his party leadership for choosing him as its candidate.

In a series of tweets, the PPP candidate for the post of mayor also thanked his party workers “who worked so hard to win us the city elections”. He expressed his determination to work together under the guidance of the party chairman.

“I am a resident of Karachi, this city is in my veins and nothing would be a greater honor for me than to work for the betterment of our great city.”

Wahab pledged to utilize his best talents and take the entire city forward in collaboration with all stakeholders, political and administrative.

Meanwhile, Kashif Shoro – who has been selected as the party’s candidate for the post of Mayor of Hyderabad – thanked the PPP chairman for handing over the responsibility to him.

“I will do my best to fulfill the responsibilities and expectations of the people of my city and serve with enthusiasm,” the PPP candidate vowed.

Najmi Alam offers to resign to make way for Wahab

PPP UC Chairman Syed Najmi Alam offered to resign from his post to pave the way for Wahab to continue his services if he wins the elections.

According to the rules, Wahab has to win the elections within six months if he manages to get the desired position.

He said in a video message that this seat was given to me by the party and I am ready to give it up to Wahab.
