Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday sued a nonprofit organization that fights hate speech and misinformation, accusing it of making false claims and allowing advertisers on the platform. Accused of encouraging disinvestment.
US media previously reported that Elon Musk-owned X sent a letter to the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) and threatened to sue for non-profit damages.
In response to the letter, CCDH lawyers accused X of “intimidating those who dare to advocate against online incitement, hate speech and harmful content.” He also said that there is no truth in X’s allegations.
The case stems from a media report published in July that revealed the findings of a CCDH investigation into an increase in hate speech against minority communities on the platform.
X and its CEO Linda Yacarino dismissed the report as false, saying it was “based on a collection of inaccurate, misleading and outdated metrics, mostly from shortly after the Twitter acquisition.”
In a blog post on Monday, X said CCDH accessed its data without permission and accused it of violating X’s terms by scraping data from its platform.
He reiterated that the metrics in the research were used out of context to make unsubstantiated claims about X.
CCDH did not respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.
X recently filed a lawsuit against four unnamed entities in Texas and Israel’s Bright Data for scraping data.
