A delegation from the telecom industry briefed the National Assembly’s Standing Steering Committee on Information Technology that the launch of 5G technology in Pakistan is impossible due to the increase in electricity prices.
The meeting was presided over by the member of the standing committee, Naz Baloch.
Representatives of the telecom sector told the committee that the recent economic crisis has significantly reduced the profitability of the industry.
He said that the industry has recorded 1.5 percent profit margin in Universal Service Fund in Pakistan.
Also, they could not import telecom related gadgets, as letters of credit could not be opened, which hindered the service.
He asked the committee to send recommendations to the federal government to solve their problems.
A member of the IT Ministry told the meeting that illegal SIMs are the cause of financial crimes.
He said that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has started live biometric verification to prevent issuance of illegal SIMs. He said that now sims will not be issued through dummy fingerprints.
