North Korea ended year with a ballistic missile test.

South Korea’s military says North Korea has fired three short-range ballistic missiles into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula.

The latest volley comes five days after North Korea flew a drone into South Korean airspace for the first time since 2017.

North Korea has launched more missiles this year than ever before.

Washington said the latest missile launches did not pose an immediate threat to the United States or its allies.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said three short-range ballistic missiles were fired from North Hwange Province, south of the capital Pyongyang, at around 08:00 local time (23:00 GMT).

“North Korea’s ballistic missile launch is a serious provocation that undermines the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula as well as the international community,” he added.

South Korea’s military said the missiles flew about 350 kilometers (217 miles).

Japan’s coast guard earlier said a missile had fallen into the sea.

South Korea’s military apologized this week for failing to shoot down five drones that North Korea had flown across their border.

Seoul fired warning shots and sent jets and attack helicopters to shoot down the plane, one of which flew close to the capital.

Earlier this month, the US and its Asian allies imposed sanctions on three top North Korean officials linked to the country’s recent missile tests.

Relations between North and South Korea have soured since the conservative government of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yul took power in May, vowing to take a tougher stance against Pyongyang.

North Korea has become more aggressive under the leadership of Kim Jong-un, who has overseen recent developments in its weapons program.

He recently said he wanted his country to have the world’s most powerful nuclear force, calling it an “irreversible” nuclear state.
