As Karachi grapples with the dreaded challenge of street crime, a Pakistani-Canadian was shot dead by bandits after resisting a robbery attempt in the port city’s Nazimabad area, JEE News reported.
According to the details, the deceased has been identified as Amin Alvi and he was out for shopping with four children when he encountered robbers near the board office.
Police say the Pakistani-Canadian national went to a bank and a money exchange before taking the children shopping.
As described by one of the children accompanying Alvi, two armed men came on a motorcycle, and one of them got off the two-wheeler.
The boy told police that he approached the car and asked the victim to hand over his cash and other valuables.
He said Alvi agreed to do as the robber asked but pushed him back as soon as he reached into the victim’s pocket.
The child added that he encouraged the triggerman to pull the trigger and shoot Alvi before fleeing with his accomplice.
He said none of the drivers who stopped helped Alvi, who was left lying on the road for several minutes.
However, a rickshaw driver eventually took him to hospital, where he died during treatment, the child concluded.
Police said that Alvi had retired from a foreign airline five years ago and used to come to Karachi two or three times a year.
He said that his funeral prayers will be offered after his family reaches Karachi. As of the writing of this report, no case has been registered to investigate the matter.
Robbers gun down businessman
Apart from this, a potato and onion trader was killed by unknown robbers in Orangi Town area for resisting the robbery attempt. 45-year-old Naseem was the father of six daughters. The family has demanded the police to arrest the killers immediately.
Family members said that Naseem was a big businessman. He said that he had left home early in the morning to go to the vegetable market when he was attacked by robbers.
According to witnesses, the suspects were already waiting on the road, police said, adding that when he got into his car with his driver and workers, they killed the victim.
Officials said they are trying to get CCTV camera footage of the incident. According to him, the killers had stolen more than one lakh rupees.
Police have been unable to control street crime in Karachi as the number of shooting deaths during robberies in the city has reached 70 in the last six months of this year.
