KARACHI: Authorities have allowed fishermen in Balochistan to resume their activities as the threat of Cyclone Biparjoy receded to low pressure, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said. Told on Saturday.
According to the latest advisory issued by the Meteorological Department, the fishermen of Balochistan can leave for fishing today while the fishermen of Sindh can resume their business from tomorrow (Sunday).
The PMD said Cyclone Cyclone (CS) Biparjoy had moved further towards the northeast during the last 12 hours and turned into a depression.
The system is currently located at Tharparkar in southwest Rajasthan, India and adjoining areas of southeast Pakistan at latitude 24.4°N and longitude 71.2°E.
The PMD said it is likely to move further east and weaken into a low pressure area over Rajasthan, which will bring heavy rains along with winds over the affected areas.
Possible Effects:
- More rain accompanied by thundershowers with gustiness of 50 kmph to 30-40 kmph is expected over parts of Tharparkar, Umarkot and Badin districts today.
- There is a possibility of rain with thunder in Thatta, Sajawal and Mirpurkhas districts.
The storm uprooted power poles and uprooted trees after it hit the Indian coastline on Friday, but the storm was weaker than feared, and two deaths were confirmed.
More than 180,000 people in the Indian state of Gujarat and Pakistan’s Sindh province fled the path of Biparjoy – which means “destruction” in Bengali – before landfall on Thursday evening.
Two people drowned in floodwaters in Bhavnagar district on Thursday evening, the Gujarat state government said.
Relief director CC Patel told JEE News that another 23 people were injured in the storm.
In Pakistan, the storm had no major impact, with rain reported in parts of the southern city of Karachi, which was on high alert.
