ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister for Law Nazir Tarar has confirmed that proposals to introduce electoral reforms have been finalized and are being drafted after the parliamentary committee agreed on amendments to the Election Act 2017.
According to JEE News, the government will now prepare the final draft after consulting political parties.
The minister announced the development after an in-camera meeting of the committee to review the Election Act 2017 in the federal capital, chaired by Economic Affairs Minister Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Tarr said that the government is also expecting suggestions from the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) and amendments are being made beyond the affiliation of political parties.
He said that some written suggestions would come from GDA member Dr. Fehmida Mirza.
The minister added that “fruits of good legislation” can only be achieved through “good attitudes”.
Tarr said that the Election Commission of Pakistan is there regarding the amendments. However, he added that overseas Pakistanis would not be able to vote through the internet.
According to the sources, the farewell session of the National Assembly will be called for the legislation after the proposed draft amendments are approved by the political parties.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice-Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi complained that his party was not being taken into confidence on electoral reforms despite being a major stakeholder.
“Section 9 of the Election Act 2017 is very vague,” he said while talking to the media at a district court in Multan two days ago.
