At least 45 people have been killed by a powerful tropical storm in the Philippines, officials say, as flooding and landslides wreak havoc in southern provinces.

Typhoon Nalgay caused the most destruction in Maguindanao province on the island of Mindanao. There is widespread flooding in and around Cotabato City.

Nalga is sweeping the north, where capital Manila is expected to receive torrential rain.

Rescue workers pulled out several bodies from the mudslide. Hurricane-force winds are expected to reach 95 km/h (59 mph).

The Coast Guard has suspended ferry service to most of the peninsula, where many people travel by boat every day. The Coast Guard is moving many people to shelters.

Heavy rains began on Thursday and the storm is expected to reach its peak later this week. The storm has also forced some schools to close and buses to stop running.

Earlier on Saturday, authorities had put the death toll at 72, but this has since been revised.

The Philippines typically experiences 20 typhoons or tropical storms annually. They come from the Pacific Ocean, and the Nalga is not particularly strong – however, it is huge, covers much of the country, and is very wet.

Some areas have recorded the highest daily rainfall. Floods and landslides are always one of the biggest threats with the Philippines’ unstable geography and deforestation.

A warning of possible mudslides has been issued on the slopes of the largest volcano.

Emergency services are well-trained in responding to major storms, but the high volume of water has made it difficult to rescue those trapped.
