ISLAMABAD: Commenting on the petitions filed in the Supreme Court against the trial of civilians in military courts, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Thursday said there were “political motives” behind the move.
Addressing the National Assembly, the Defense Minister criticized those approaching the Supreme Court challenging the trial of civilians in military courts and said that the practice of trying civilians in military courts is not new.
He said that the military courts sentenced 24 to 25 civilians during the previous regime while the judiciary confirmed the cases.
Asif said that the petitioners should not compromise the country’s dignity for political gain.
He said that the security personnel, who are our benefactors, continued to make sacrifices in the ongoing war against terrorism.
The minister, once again, condemned the May 9 operations in which martyrs’ memorials and military installations were attacked and highlighted that political activists were allegedly encouraged by their leader to attack the state. was provoked.
He also highlighted the importance of respecting the boundaries of each institution while cautioning against encroachment and said that such actions could lead to conflict and hurt national interests.
He said that Parliament will not allow any interference in its jurisdiction.
Condemning May 9 mayhem
Meanwhile, in his address to the National Assembly, Federal Minister Mian Javed Latif said that the perpetrators and planners of the May 9 incident should be punished and the action against them should not be left unfinished.
The events of May 9 exposed their nefarious intentions.
Latif said that May 9 has also exposed the misdeeds of those who launched an individual.
