LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has directed party workers to protest strongly and become the “voice of the people” after high electricity bills rocked already overburdened consumers. JEE News reported on Monday.
In an instruction issued to the PPP workers on Sunday, Party Secretary General Syed Nayar Hussain Bukhari directed the workers to protest at the city union council and tehsil levels.
He said that the workers of the People’s Party should become the voice of the people and start protesting against the high electricity rates.
The protest call comes as protesters across the country are demanding lower electricity rates and an end to additional taxes on utility bills, warning they will not pay bills if the demands are not met.
Protests were also held by citizens and businessmen in various cities across the country, with political parties including Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) condemning the increase in electricity bills and additional taxes.
Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Siraj-ul-Haq announced a nationwide protest on September 2 (Saturday) during a function on the occasion of Jamaat-e-Islami’s 82nd foundation day in Ichhra on Sunday.
He appealed to the public to raise their voice against injustice and actively participate in the protest, adding that if the government remained firm on its decision, the party would organize a protest in front of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) offices. .
He added that the current inflation is a direct result of the wrong economic strategies of the previous governments of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and PPP.
He said that the former rulers made a deal with the IMF while laying landmines for the people.
