ISLAMABAD: As the government prepares for the next general elections, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), a key member of the ruling coalition, has opposed the dissolution of the assemblies before the end of their constitutional term.
The party, which proposed to dissolve the assemblies on August 8, has once again proposed to allow the National Assembly and the provincial assemblies of Sindh and Balochistan to complete their terms.
“Dissolving the assemblies just a few days before the end of their term will not send a positive message. PPP Secretary General Syed Nayar Hussain Bukhari said in a statement issued on Friday that a modest extension of 30 days makes no significant difference. Will not have to.
Bukhari said that the members of the Assembly took oath on August 13, 2018. Therefore, elections should be held on the same date when the five-year term is completed.
He further suggested that general elections should be held in the country by October 12.
Bukhari added that all political parties and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) know very well when the term of the government is ending.
According to the constitution, the ECP is always ready to hold elections within 60 days of the expiry of the term.
Regarding the caretaker government, Bukhari said that the decision will be taken by the Prime Minister and the opposition leader.
“If they do not agree on a name, the matter will be referred to a parliamentary committee.”
Bukhari also said that PPP Chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is part of the cabinet and the prime minister will consult with the party leadership regarding the caretaker government.
