Karachi: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has condemned the violent incidents in the country after the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on May 9, 2023 and demanded the arrest of those involved in the violence.

This demand was made in the meeting of Central Executive Committee (CEC) of Pakistan People’s Party held at Bilawal House on Friday. People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and former President Asif Ali Zardari jointly chaired the meeting, in which May 9, 2023 was declared as a dark day in the history of Pakistan.

Briefing the media after the CEC meeting, People’s Party Leader and Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman said that the participants of the meeting have expressed full confidence in the leadership of Bilawal and Asif Ali Zardari. The meeting also rejected the ongoing process of digital census in the country and demanded that a uniform standard be adopted for population enumeration across the country.

The CEC meeting took notice of the situation that the census process is still going on in some areas while the counting process has been completed in the rest of the country.

Bilawal Bhutto’s services as Foreign Minister were also appreciated in the meeting as the country was able to overcome the situation of diplomatic isolation due to his efforts. It has been said that Bilawal’s recent participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting in India has increased Pakistan’s stature in the international community. Bilawal’s efforts to highlight the Kashmir issue at the international level were also appreciated in the meeting.

Sherry Rehman said that the violent incidents of May 9 had no precedent in the history of Pakistan, adding that the followers of People’s Party never resorted to such violent acts despite facing very difficult times.

He said that even after the martyrdom of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto, the followers of the People’s Party did not show such a reaction.

He recalled that former President Asif Ali Zardari always raised slogans for the unity and harmony of Pakistan whenever the country faced difficult times.

Criticizing PTI’s style of politics, he said that PTI’s leadership always cared about its own political survival instead of caring about the integrity of Pakistan.

Rehman said that PTI has crossed red lines in Pakistan’s politics.

In reply to a question, he said that the law should be implemented to take appropriate penal action against miscreants involved in the May 9 arson attacks and violence.

He said that after the arrest of Imran Khan, PTI leaders had given orders to carry out acts of violence and arson in the country because later they accepted the responsibility for the disturbing situation in the country. He refused to do it.

He said that PTI leaders are experts in taking U-turns in politics.
