PR has Plans to Upgrade Five Major Railway Stations.

LAHORE: The Ministry of Railways is planning to develop five major railway stations of the country on modern lines for the convenience of passengers to help the department in getting maximum revenue.

According to the official news agency, the purpose of upgrading the railway stations is to make them commercial hubs for business activities and provide convenience to passengers.

The five railway stations include Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar and Quetta. The PR officer said that this decision has been taken on the instructions of Railway Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq.

He further said that the Government of Pakistan is taking several steps to improve the performance of the Railways and will provide maximum facilities to the public.

Earlier it was revealed that Pakistan Railways is planning to purchase 25 diesel-electric locomotives for various shunting points across the country to replace the old locomotives that will soon be phased out.

The plan for procurement and manufacturing of 25 shunting engines will be implemented in three years. Sources in the Ministry of Railways told the official APP that 14 billion rupees.

At present, he said, only 51 locomotives are being operated for this service against 98 shunting points at various railway stations across the country. Additionally, most of the older engines will be scrapped due to high maintenance costs.
