President Alvi approved appointment of Justice Qazi Faiz Isa as Chief Justice.

ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi on Wednesday approved the appointment of senior-most judge Justice Qazi Faiz Isa as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan.

This appointment will take place from September 17, 2023 under Article 179 of the Constitution with the retirement of the present Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandial on September 16.

Later, the Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification confirming the appointment.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (3) of Article 175 A read with Article 177 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is pleased to appoint the Hon’ble Mr. Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, will be the Chief Justice of Pakistan with effect from September 17, 2023.” The notification said.

Justice Isa will become the 29th highest judge of the country after taking oath as Chief Justice on September 17. President Alvi will administer oath to Justice Isa.

Justice Isa — a brief profile

Born on October 26, 1959 in Quetta, Justice Isa Pashin is the son of the late Qazi Muhammad Isa, who was at the forefront of the Pakistan Movement, and the grandson of Qazi Jalaluddin, the Prime Minister of the Khanate of Kalat. In pre-Partition India

In his early years, Justice Isa was part of the Bar of England and Wales in the 1980s and was enrolled as an advocate of the Supreme Court from Balochistan.

He practiced law for over 27 years before all High Courts, Federal Shariat Court and Supreme Court.

Later, he served as a member of Balochistan High Court Bar Association, Sindh High Court Bar Association and life member of Supreme Court Bar Association and also served as Chief Justice of Balochistan at various times.

When called upon by the High Courts and the Supreme Court, Faqih offered his services as amicus curiae and also conducted international arbitration.

He is a strong supporter of the Constitution and the rule of law, which is reflected in his decisions.

The senior jurist is also the founder of the system of transparent recruitment of officials and officers through advertisements in the High Courts.

On September 5, 2014, Justice Isa was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
