The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday expelled 10 Union Committee (UC) chairmen and one vice-chairman from the party for violating the party’s directives in the recent mayoral election in Karachi.
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate Murtaza Wahab defeated Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman after PTI’s local body representatives refused to vote for the latter in the June 15 elections. He was elected the mayor of Karachi.
According to the results, the leader of People’s Party got 173 votes while the head of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi got 160 votes.
In a separate notification issued to 11 party members earlier today, PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Shaikh told delegates that their primary party membership has been “terminated with immediate effect”.
Those PTI members whose memberships have been terminated include:

- Salahuddin son of Asrarul Haq Chairman UC-6 TMC Mominabad, District West, Karachi
- Amjad Ali son of M Roshan Khan Chairman UC-05 TM KMC Mominabad, District West, Karachi
- Asim Haider Son of Saeed Ul Hasan Chairman UC-03 TMC – Malir, Karachi Malir, District Malir, Karachi
- Aslam Khan Niazi son of M Yaqoob Khan Niazi, Chairman UC-02 TMC President Karachi South
- Sanobar Farhan returns with Farhan Ayub on PTI reserved seats for women in Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
- Zubair Musa son of Muhammad Musa, Chairman UC-02 TMC – Morero Mirbehar, Kemari
- Abdul Ghani son of Yunus, Chairman UC-01 TMC Lyari, South, Karachi
- Azizullah son of Muhammad Saleh Chairman UC-15 TMC Manghopir, District West, Karachi
- Sulaiman Khan son of Ali Haider Chairman UC-05 TMC Shah Faisal Karachi Korangi
- Muhammad Kabir son of Muhammad Zareen, Vice Chairman UC 07 TMC Mominabad, District West, Karachi
The notification of termination of almost all members stated: “I, Haleem Adil Shaikh, President Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Sindh have issued a termination letter…under which your basic membership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf would have been terminated with immediate effect. Is.”
The letters further stated that the concerned members are being “dismissed due to your non-attendance on Election Day 15-06-2023 and in complete violation of party instructions issued by me letter No. PS/ SP/9/2023 dated 11-06- 2023 as well as letter No. PS/SP/15/PL/KMC dated 12-06-2023 from Mr. Muhammad Mubashir Hafeezul Haque, Parliamentary Leader in KMC City Council.”
He further said that the refusal to vote for the JI candidates was “completely against the announcement made by Chairman PTI Mr. Imran Khan to support Jamaat-e-Islami candidates contesting the elections of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.” The KMC will vote in favor of the KMC candidates Mr. Naeemur Rehman Khan and Mr. Saifuddin for Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively.”
However, in the case of Muhammad Kabir (Vice-Chairman UC 07 TMC Mominabad), Adil wrote: Your actions are in complete violation of the Party Constitution as well as the instructions issued by me vide letter No. PS/SP/9/2023. were against. 11-06-2023 along with Parliamentary Leader Mr. Muhammad Kamran in TMC Council Mominabad.
It issued a chargesheet against Kabir for filing nomination papers as an independent candidate, while he was elected as vice-chairman of UC-07 TMC Mominabad on a PTI ticket.
Further, Kabir and his supporters were accused of attacking the said TMC nominees and threatening the nominated parliamentary leader for TMC Mominabad on WhatsApp.
While some expelled members were accused of not submitting responses, others were criticized for submitting in a similar “stereotyped slipshod manner”.
