ISLAMABAD: Elections are likely to be held in February next year, former interior minister Rana Sanaullah and opposition leader Raja Riaz said while commenting on the likely timing of general elections in the country.

Sanaullah representing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) also said that party supremo Nawaz Sharif is expected to return to Pakistan to lead the election campaign before the elections.

Rana expressed his views and said that he is sure that the establishment also wants to hold elections in 90 days. However, he added, elections will be held in February due to delimitation of constituencies.

The delimitation process will be completed by December. Ahead of the elections, Nawaz is expected to return home in October to lead the campaign.

The former minister was confident that his party supremo PML-N chief organizer Maryam Nawaz and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar would be acquitted of such trumped-up charges.

Meanwhile, Riyadh also maintained that the elections would be held a week before or after February 15.

Talking to a news channel, he said that due to the current economic situation, the elections may be delayed by a few more months to run the country.

He said that this time is not for politics but for saving the country.

Without elaborating, he said the “elders” had decided to hold elections in February 2024.

Before caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar was sworn in on August 14, former Prime Minister and Muslim League (N) President Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope that the former Prime Minister would ensure the conduct of transparent, free and impartial elections.
