Real Madrid players and fans showed their support for Vinicius Junior as they beat Rao Vallecano 2-1 at the Bernabeu.

The win was the club’s first since their Brazilian forward was racially abused at Valencia on Sunday.

Venezius was ruled out through injury and Real’s players took to the pitch in their number 20 shirts, while the captains of both teams wore armbands bearing anti-racist messages.

Supporters chanted the 22-year-old’s name in the 20th minute in solidarity.

Players from the two clubs joined together before kick-off at the La Liga fixture under the slogan “Putting racists out of football”.

A banner displayed in the stands also read: “We are all Venetians. Enough is enough”.

Vinicius, whose red card against Valencia was withdrawn, was praised after taking to the pitch before the match.

He watched from the stands, where he sat with Real president Florentino Perez.

Vinicius rose to his feet to acknowledge the show of support and later posted a photo of himself waving to fans on Instagram, with the message: “I love them! Thank you, thank you and thank you”.

Fellow Brazilian Rodrigo scored in the 89th minute for third-placed Real.

They saw Karim Benzema’s opener canceled out by Raul De Tomas – and Rodrigo celebrated his goal with a Black Power salute.

La Liga president Javier Tebas apologized to Vencius on Wednesday, saying he had not meant to “attack” the player in a social media row following Sunday’s events.

Vinicius, who was sent off for violent behavior at the end of the match in Valencia, said the Spanish league “belongs to racists”.

Tabas and La Liga’s handling of the incident was widely condemned after the president told Venezius that “you need to educate yourself properly”.

La Liga has said it will explore “more sanctioning powers” to punish incidents of racism.

The Spanish Football Federation announced on Tuesday that Valencia had been sanctioned with a partial stadium closure for five matches and a 45,000 euro (£39,000) fine.

Real manager Carlo Ancelotti said of the ban: “I was surprised by the competition committee’s decision. I think it’s the right decision.”

Before Tuesday night’s games between Real Valladolid and Barcelona, and Celta Vigo and Girona, players and match officials stood behind banners reading “Racism, out of football”.

Barcelona winger Raphinha also showed support for his Brazilian compatriot in the second half when he was substituted.
