ISLAMABAD: A case of assets in excess of income against former DGISI Lt. Gen. (retd) Faiz Hameed was sent to the National Accountability Bureau a few weeks ago, but the bureau returned the reference.
Informed sources in NAB told JEE News that a few weeks ago, the NAB Rawalpindi office received a file containing complete details of General Faiz’s income tax record and two pages signed by some unknown local people of Chakwal. An inquiry was initiated into the complaint. Against former DG ISI
DG NAB considered the file and after consulting his seniors returned the case with the direction that a formal request be made to the bureau by the authorities concerned, these sources said.
According to the sources, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also knew what was referred by NAB against General Faiz and how the bureau reacted in the past.
Now, after the appointment of the new chairman of NAB, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Nazir Ahmed Butt, the case is expected to be sent back to NAB to initiate formal action against the country’s former top spy.
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said on Wednesday that investigative agencies are conducting an inquiry against former ISI chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed and any progress made in this regard will be shared with the media.
The interior minister did not say which government investigative agency is conducting the inquiry against Lt Gen (retd) Faiz. He also did not say what investigation is going on against the former DGISI. However, Rana Sanaullah said that General Faiz’s court martial can only be conducted by the institution. He further said that the military trial takes place in the General Headquarters, not the Ministry of Interior.
In an interview, PMLN senior vice president and chief organizer Maryam Nawaz demanded a court martial for General Faiz. He alleged that Faiz played a role in destabilizing the country by undermining the PMLN government for two years and supporting the Imran Khan government for four years. Maryam stressed the need for exemplary punishment for Faiz to ensure that no one dares to play an “unconstitutional role” in the future. On the same day (Wednesday), a senior journalist and anchor person shared General Faiz’s reaction to Maryam Nawaz’s speech on social media. According to the journalist, the former DGISI, in response to the allegations leveled by Maryam Nawaz, has reminded her through text messages that she was just a Major General in 2017-18 and asked if any Major General had military discipline. He also said that all the judgments (against Sharifs) were given by the courts.
