An Islamabad court on Sunday granted one-day physical remand to senior journalist Ayaz Ameer, who was arrested on Friday after his daughter-in-law was murdered at his house.
The 37-year-old victim Sara Bibi is suspected to have been killed by her husband Ayaz Amir’s son Shahnawaz.
According to sources, Sara and Shahnawaz had an argument over a domestic dispute on Thursday night which resulted in her death as the accused allegedly hit her on the head with an iron dumbbell.
After killing the wife, sources revealed that the accused allegedly dumped her body in the bathtub. Police arrested the accused and took him to Shahzad Town police station for further investigation.
Sources further said that Shahzad Town police later named Ayaz Amir in the case. He said that in the light of Shahnawaz’s interrogation, the police obtained an arrest warrant for Ayaz Amir from the area magistrate on Saturday.
When the senior journalist was produced before the District Magistrate Zahid Tirmizi today, he pleaded that he had reported the murder to the police.
“I was the one who gave the address of the farmhouse to the Station House Officer (SHO),” Aamir added.
His lawyer, Nasir Asghar, also said that Aamir was “not named in the case” and that “no evidence was found” against his client.
However, the police requested the court for a four-day physical remand of the accused and said that the accused Ayaz Amir should be interrogated.
“This is a very high-profile case,” the Canadian-born Pakistani woman has been killed, police added.
The court accepted the request of the police and ordered a one-day physical remand and handed over the accused to the authorities.
