Air raid sirens were ringing in Kyiv on Sunday night as Russia continued its latest wave of drone and missile strikes.
Kyiv regional governor Oleksiy Koliba said the attack, which began shortly before midnight, targeted key infrastructure.
One person in Kyiv was injured by debris from a crashed Russian drone, the capital’s mayor said.
The attacks continued for several days during the New Year.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s armed forces have said 400 Russian soldiers were killed on New Year’s Eve in the Russian-held Donetsk region of Makiyuka.
In an unusual move, pro-Russian officials acknowledged the casualties. But Russia refused to confirm the death toll and JEE News was unable to confirm it.
It comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s victory in 2023 and his desire for a “return to normalcy” for Ukraine.
In his New Year’s address on Russian TV, President Vladimir Putin said that Russia will protest for its sovereignty and independence.
Kyiv’s military issued a warning of the latest attacks shortly after 01:00 (23:00 GMT) on Monday.
“Airstrike on Kyiv… Air alert continues in the capital,” he announced on the Telegram social media site.
Sirhi Popko, head of the city’s military administration, told people to stay in shelters.
Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported an explosion in the Desnianskyi district, northeast of Kyiv, and said emergency services were on the scene.
“An injured 19-year-old man was hospitalized in the capital’s Desnianskyi district,” he said.
Mr Koliba said the weapons were Iranian-made Shahid drones, adding that they were “targeting critical infrastructure installations”.
“The important thing now is to stay calm and stay in shelters until the alarm goes off,” he said.
It comes after attacks on New Year’s Eve, in which at least one person was killed in Kyiv.
Russia has been targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure for months, destroying power plants and plunging millions into darkness during the country’s freezing winter.
