The Senate on Friday successfully passed the Election Act Amendment Bill with an overwhelming majority.
The passage of the bill marks a significant step towards reforming and enhancing the existing electoral process, ensuring a more transparent and inclusive democratic process.
One of the important amendments introduced by the Bill is the revision of Section 57 of the Election Act.
This particular amendment is of great importance as it directly affects the scheduling and conduct of general elections.
Under the new provisions, the Election Commission has been empowered to announce the date or dates of the upcoming general elections.
Further, the amendment empowers the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to make necessary changes in the election programme.
The amendment also gives flexibility to the electoral body to announce a new election schedule or a new date of elections if circumstances warrant such changes.
The amendments introduced in the Bill seek to streamline the electoral process, enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the conduct of elections.
