At least 155 people have been injured after two trains collided on the outskirts of Barcelona, emergency services said.
The accident, which occurred around 07:50 (06:50 GMT), happened at a station in Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region.
Local media reported that the trains were traveling in the same direction and collided while one was stationary at the station.
Catalan police are investigating how the incident happened.
The accident happened at the Montcada i Reixac – Manresa station, about 12 kilometers (7 mi) from the city center.
Emergency services official John Carlos Gomez told reporters at the scene that 155 people were injured in the collision, of which 14 passengers were transported to a local medical center for further treatment.
“We are talking about several bruises and some head injuries, but nothing serious,” he said, adding that the passengers were being examined to “rule out any kind of fracture.” Can be done”.
Mr Gomes said the train was “moving very slowly (when the collision happened) but people who were standing fell and hurt themselves”.
A regional fire service spokesman said the moving train collided with the “rear end” of a train parked at the station.
Train services on several lines were briefly affected due to the accident, the regional government said.
Describing the moment of the collision, a passenger told the Ser Catalunya outlet that he felt a “huge blow” and said “people were screaming”.
Another passenger told JEE News he saw “people covered in blood on them, because they had been blown apart”.
Spanish Transport Minister Raquel Sanchez said she was closely monitoring the situation and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
There have been several accidents on Catalonia’s regional train system in recent years, with regional authorities blaming a lack of rail funding from the central government.
The president of the Catalan regional government, Pere Aragonés I GarcÃa, demanded an urgent “explanation” from rail operator Renfe and the Spanish government about the causes of the accident.
And regional assembly speaker Laura Boras said it was “imperative” that the incident did not happen again.
He wrote on Twitter that “Catalans deserve safe” rail transport.
