Islamabad: PTI leader and former federal minister Shireen Mazari has challenged Section 124A of the Pakistan Penal Code in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court Athar Minullah (today) will hear the application on Friday.

In the petition filed through the mediation of Barrister Abuzar Salman Khan Niazi, the IGs and Chief Secretary of the four provinces including Islamabad were made defendants in the case and the position was taken that Section 124A is being used to suppress freedom of expression.

It further said that Article 124A was inconsistent with the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution, adding that sedition cases were designed to suppress criticism and freedom of expression.

The petition also requested the court to stop the registration of sedition cases and issue an injunction against them.

Talking to the media, Shireen said that he has not registered a case of sedition against anyone. He said that the PTI chairman released the arrested journalists immediately.
