Shraddha Walker murder: Police investigating body parts found in Delhi wood

Police in the Indian capital Delhi have started an investigation into the alleged murder of a woman by her partner.

Shraddha Walker, 27, was killed in May but her death came to light this week after her father reported her missing.

They have arrested Aftab Poonawala and charged him with murder.

They claim he strangled her, dismembered her body and dumped it in the woods near their home. He has not yet made a public statement.

The killing made headlines in India, largely because of sensational police claims that Mr Poonawalla had “stored some of the body parts in a new fridge”.

According to news agency ANI, police on Tuesday morning took Mr. Poonawalla “to a place in the forest where he allegedly disposed of parts of the body”.

Police said Walker and Poonawalla met through a dating app in Mumbai city and were living together for the past three years. Earlier this year, they moved to Delhi after an alleged tiff with Walker’s family who disapproved of their relationship.

“Soon after the couple shifted, Shraddha started pressurizing the man to marry her,” senior police official Ankit Chauhan told JEE News.

“The two often quarreled and it got out of control. On May 18, the man lost his temper and strangled her,” he said.

Walker’s family tried to contact her after being informed by her friends that they had not heard from her in months.

“He has not responded to any of my texts since August,” his friend Laxman Nadar told JEE News. “His phone was switched off. After inquiring about it from other friends, I informed his brother.”

When Walker’s father also failed to reach him, he lodged a missing complaint with the Mumbai police. In her complaint, she also accused Poonawalla of domestic abuse, alleging that her “daughter would call her mother and say that Aftab had beaten her up”.
