Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab said that the Sindh Cabinet has approved new and bigger cemeteries in Karachi after it was revealed that there is a severe shortage of burial space.
He said that lack of burial space in 38 graveyards of Karachi is a serious problem.
Earlier, a report revealed that all graveyards in the mega city under Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) are full.
On JEE News’s inquiry, KMC Senior Director Municipal Services Mazhar Khan said that they have contacted the Sindh government to acquire land for new cemeteries.
Murtaza Wahab said that land has been identified for new graveyards while action has been taken against elements who were fleecing bereaved citizens in search of a place to bury their loved ones.
He added that the Sindh Cabinet has also decided to set up a “Shahr Khumoshan Authority” which will monitor the construction of graveyards as per the planned models.
Murtaza Wahab said that he will ensure that the private sector is also represented in the authority.
