Najam Sethi, chairman of the now-defunct management committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), tried to convince Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari to the last minute. However, the latter did not respond, reliable sources told JEE News.
According to sources, the party was approached on Monday by “some friends” to convince them to withdraw the name of former PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf in the race to head the board.
However, the party – upset over the resignation of former National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) chairman Tariq Malik – rejected the proposal.
The PPP is pushing for the post of PCB chief to be handed over to Ashraf, while Sethi had to go home due to tensions between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) and the Zardari-led party.
Moreover, Sethi had to bear another humiliation.
Their decision to form a new board of governors during their last meeting on June 20 was automatically revoked after the management committee was dissolved following the appointment of Election Commissioner Ahmed Shahzad Farooq Rana as acting chairman of the cricketing body on Thursday. .
Meanwhile, the PCB has announced that the elections for the top PCB post will be held next week on June 27.
In a statement, the board said the election for the post of chairman will be held at its headquarters in Lahore, and the schedule will be released after receipt of nominations from departments and service organizations.
The Commission’s office has also written to departments and service organizations to nominate their representatives.
“The PCB chair will be selected in a fair and transparent manner while following due process and ensuring compliance with all legal requirements,” the PCB quoted Rana as saying.
