Prince Andrew was devastated when King Charles gave him the bad news just days before Queen Elizabeth II’s death.
An insider revealed the Duke of York was ‘in tears’ when he was told he could no longer return to his royal duties and that his public life was over for good.
“As naive as it sounds, she always hoped to regain her position as a senior royal,” the source told the Mail on Sunday.
“At the meeting Charles told him he could go and live the good life, the good life, but his public life as a royal was over.
“He was told: ‘You have to accept this.’
Andrew’s fortunes changed a few months later when he settled his civil case with American Virginia Gaffry out of court.
Andrew’s snub will be seen in particular next Sunday (November 13) as the rest of the royal family will mark a Remembrance Day service at the cenotaph.
