Syria says Israel strikes Damascus airport, kills five soldiers

Israel launched an airstrike on Syria’s Damascus International Airport and other locations south of the capital, killing five soldiers and causing material damage, the Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

A ministry statement said Syrian air defenses intercepted the attack and managed to shoot down most of the missiles.

It could not be immediately confirmed whether airport operations were affected by the strike.

Regional diplomatic and intelligence sources told that Israel had stepped up attacks on Syrian airfields to stop Tehran’s growing use of air supply lines to deliver weapons to allies including Hezbollah in Syria and Lebanon.

Tehran has adopted airlift as a more reliable means of delivering military equipment to its forces and allied fighters in Syria, after disruptions to land transfers.
