PESHAWAR: At least seven people, including four school teachers and two of their colleagues, were killed in a shooting at a school in Turi Mangal area of Kurram tribal district on Thursday. Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam also confirmed that earlier, unknown gunmen shot dead a school teacher in the upper area of tribal district Kurram and later in retaliation, unknown gunmen stormed a government school and They fired indiscriminately on the teachers sitting in the staff room.

“Four teachers of the school and two of their colleagues were killed on the spot,” he said, adding that the gunmen escaped unchallenged.

The Deputy Commissioner said that he was in touch with the local tribal elders of both the sects and appealed to them to help maintain law and order in the district. The official said that the roads are closed for traffic, so anti-social elements cannot take advantage of the situation.

According to local tribal sources and the government, the tribal district was under intense tension. A statement issued by the chief minister’s office said that these incidents were the result of a property dispute.

Kurram district has been facing communal violence for the past few years and has suffered heavy casualties.

The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Kohat has postponed the ongoing SSC examinations in tribal district Kurram following the incident. However, the board has made it clear that the examinations at other locations will continue as per the schedule.

Meanwhile, President Dr. Arif Alvi said that the attack on teachers by the enemies of education is condemnable. Condemning the attack, the head of state expressed grief over the killing of teachers on duty in two incidents. The President hoped that the accused would be punished as per the law. He also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and raised the ranks in Jannat al-Firdous.

Former President and Co-Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party Asif Ali Zardari has expressed regret over the killing of teachers. “Killing teachers in the line of duty is terrorism,” he said in a statement.

“Criminals involved in the killing of teachers should be brought to justice,” Zardari said while praying for the deceased.

Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Sajid Hussain Tori has demanded strict action against the culprits.
