The Legend of Maula Jatt likely to release in India: Report

Pakistani film “The Legend of Maula Jatt”, the first Pakistani film in more than a decade to be screened in the neighboring country, is likely to screen in Indian theaters this Friday, JEE News reported, quoting an INOX official. It has been released in theatres.

Directed by Bilal Lashari and starring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, The Legend of Maula Jatt hit the screens on October 13 with a worldwide theatrical release.

“It will be played at INOX in a few theaters in Punjab and Delhi where there are Punjabi-speaking people,” Rajendra Singh Jayala, chief programming officer of INOX Laser Limited, told the Press Trust of India.

Multiplex chain PVR Cinemas shared the release announcement on its official Instagram page but deleted it soon after. “Presenting the official poster of #TheLegendofMaulaJatt! Coming to PVR this Friday,” the post read.

The action drama, which became the highest-grossing Pakistani film of all time by grossing $10 million, was released in Pakistan on 13 October. “The Legend of Mula Jut” is an adaptation of the 1979 cult classic Mula Jut and is narrated by the producers. It is neither a remake nor a sequel.

It stars Mahira and Fawad, who are known to Indian audiences through their popular Pakistani drama Humsafar and also through Bollywood — Fawad, who was recently seen in the superhero series Miss Marvel, starred in “Khoobsurat,” “Kapoor & Has worked in “Sons”. “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” while Mahira appeared in Shah Rukh Khan’s “Raees”.

The last Pakistani film to have a theatrical release in India was Mahira’s “Bol” in 2011. Before that was “Ram Chand Pakistani” in 2008 starring Nandita Das and Rashid Farooqui. “For God” with Fawad in the cast. Naseeruddin Shah came in 2007

However, Pakistani films are screened at festivals in India. In November this year, the Dharamsala International Film Festival screened Saim Sadiq’s “Joyland”, Pakistan’s official entry in the International Film category at the 95th Academy Awards. “Khuda Ke Le” was the first Pakistani film to be included in the official selection of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

“The Legend of Maula Jatt” began production in January 2017 and concluded in June 2019. The film was initially scheduled for a theatrical release on multiple dates in 2019–2020 but was delayed due to copyright issues and the COVID-19 pandemic.
