TikToker lands in hospital after viral challenge

The latest viral trend, “75 Hard,” is a 75-day challenge that involves exercising twice a day, following a specific diet, and drinking a gallon of water a day. As a result, a tick was admitted to the hospital due to water poisoning.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to use too much water. And Michelle Fairbairn learned this the hard way after feeling sick from drinking too much water.

Water poisoning can be fatal, but only in extreme cases. If people drink three to four liters of water in a short period of time, they can suffer from water poisoning. Symptoms include headache, muscle cramps and pain.

On her 12th day of participating in the challenge, Fairbairn was not feeling well and was waking up several times in the middle of the night, feeling nauseated, weak, and using the toilet frequently.

Many have criticized the “75 Hard Challenge,” which has 1.2 billion views on TikTok, saying it encourages unhealthy habits rather than improving health. Aside from the high water intake, it doesn’t leave much room for cheat days and doesn’t give participants any chance to listen to their body’s response.

The diet for the challenge is made up of your own choice but cannot include alcohol or food outside of the chosen diet. Participants must complete two 45-minute workouts, one outdoors each day.

Eventually, Fairbairn took to her TikTok to announce that her doctor told her she was severely sodium deficient due to her extreme water intake. Her doctors advised her to drink less than half a liter of water a day while she recovered.

“Always listen to your body. These challenges are not for everyone and don’t take them too seriously. And pivot when you need to pivot, stop when you need to stop.”
