Twitter will overhaul its user verification process, Elon Musk said in a tweet on Sunday, days after he took over one of the world’s most influential social media platforms.
“The entire authentication process is currently being refined,” Musk said in his tweet, without giving further details.
Twitter is considering charging for a blue checkmark that verifies the identity of its account holder, the technology newsletter platform reported on Sunday, citing two people familiar with the matter.
If the project goes ahead, users will have to subscribe to Twitter Blue for $4.99 a month or lose their “verified” badges, according to the report.
Tesla’s CEO hasn’t made a final decision and the project could still be scrapped, but according to the platformer, it’s likely that verification will become part of Twitter Blue.
Separately, reported on Sunday that Twitter will increase the subscription price for Twitter Blue, which also verifies users, citing internal correspondence seen by them, monthly. From $4.99 to $19.99 per month.
Twitter Blue was launched in June last year as the platform’s first subscription service, offering “exclusive access to premium features” on a monthly subscription basis, including the option to edit tweets.
The feature to edit tweets was also made available earlier this month after Musk launched a Twitter poll in April asking his millions of followers if they wanted an edit button. More than 70 percent said yes.
