ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government further amended the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) rules and allowed the anti-graft watchdog to detain the accused for 30 days.
Acting President Sadiq Sanjrani signed the NAB (Amendment) Ordinance 2023 late at night after the approval of the federal cabinet.
According to the ordinance, NAB chairman can issue arrest warrant for the accused for non-cooperation during the investigation.
In June 2022, the coalition government introduced changes in the NAB law, reducing the period of physical remand from 90 days to 14 days.
Officials have not explained why the change in law was needed.
It should be noted that no Presidential Ordinance can be issued during the session of the National Assembly.
Technically, the assembly was not adjourned after the approval of the national budget on 24 June, as it was adjourned until 17 July.
However, according to a report in JEE News, the session was abruptly adjourned on Monday evening to facilitate the promulgation of the ordinance.
NAB summoned PTI chief.
Meanwhile, NAB Rawalpindi has also summoned former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Imran Khan in two different cases today (Tuesday).
The PTI chief has been directed to appear before the watchdog in the Tosha Khana case and Bushra Bibi in the National Crime Agency (NCA) UK settlement case of £190 million.
Imran Khan and his wife were summoned three times but they did not appear in the case after asking for new dates.
