Republicans have won the 218 seats needed for a majority in the lower house of Congress, a week after the mid-term elections,

Although the party’s margin in the House of Representatives is razor-thin, it is enough to block President Joe Biden’s agenda for the next two years.

But when the new Congress convenes in January, Democrats will retain control of the Senate.

A handful of seats are yet to be called.

Republicans — who had hoped to regain control of both chambers — downplayed expectations in last week’s midterms.

But he won the seat he needed for a House majority on Wednesday when California’s 27th District went to incumbent Mike Garcia.

According to JEE News, the Republican Party is now projected to win between 218-223 seats in the 435-seat House.

But with votes still long in many cliffhanger races, their majorities may not be clear for days or weeks.

Kevin McCarthy, who Republicans chose on Tuesday as their nominee to replace Democrat Nancy Pelosi as the next speaker of the House, celebrated the chamber “officially flipping.”

“Americans are ready for a new direction, and House Republicans are ready to deliver,” the California congressman tweeted Wednesday night.

To be elected speaker, the House Republican minority leader must win the support of a majority of the entire 435-member House.

But Mrs. Pelosi vowed in a statement on Wednesday night that she would not leave her contingent quietly, saying that her party would “gain strong leverage over a shrinking Republican majority.”

Mrs. Pelosi, 82, the first woman to hold the post, did not say in her press release whether she plans to stay on as minority leader, amid speculation about her future in Washington. .
