ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday asked the federal government why it felt the need to file a contempt of court case against PTI chief Imran Khan. He has reports from law enforcement agencies. “
On Friday, a 5-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandial heard the contempt of court case against the former prime minister. Imran Khan’s lawyer Salman Akram Raja and Interior Ministry’s lawyer Salman Aslam Butt were present in the court.
During the hearing, Raja informed the court that he has submitted his reply to the government documents and will now present the arguments of Imran Khan.
Interior Ministry Councilor Salman Butt said that the PTI Chairman had called D Chowk on May 24. There are data which prove that Imran Khan was aware of the Supreme Court orders and he had called the PTI. I have submitted a USB with the statements of the leaders. He further said that he is aware of the decision of the Supreme Court.
Justice Mazahir Naqvi questioned how they could distinguish between truth and falsehood, adding that the Supreme Court was not a trial court that could record statements.
The Supreme Court said that the matter referred to in the petition has been discussed. He further said that the matter of contempt of court is between the court and the contempt of court.
He further said that the court can issue a notice of contempt of court in the light of the reports of the agencies if necessary. He questioned why the government wanted to file a contempt of court case against the PTI chief.
It is the duty of the Supreme Court to take contempt of court proceedings if necessary. Government can only provide support. The Ministry of Home Affairs is of the view that the contempt of court action is a continuation of the Supreme Court’s decision regarding PTI’s entry into the red zone of the Long March.
The Chief Justice said that Imran Khan claimed that there was chaos on May 25 and the protesters were out of control. However, it seems that the PTI leader did not go to D Chowk himself but asked his supporters to do so, he added.
Justice Bandyal also said that the PTI’s intention was always to go to D Chowk, PTI’s lawyers convinced the court that the obstacles had been removed. However, later he did not honor his commitment and moved to D Chowk.
