LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League (Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain met former President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday to discuss the formation of a caretaker setup in Punjab.
According to an official statement, Zardari and Shujaat reviewed the current political situation in Punjab after the dissolution of the assembly. The two leaders also approached the senior leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) to discuss the caretaker setup in Punjab.
The Muslim League (Q) leader also congratulated Zardari on the victory of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the second phase of local body elections in Sindh.
The statement further said that Federal Minister Chaudhry Salik Hussain and Chaudhry Shafi Hussain also participated in the meeting.
On the other hand, PML-Q leader Pervaiz Elahi announced three names for caretaker chief minister of Punjab after meeting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan.
Elahi announced that he has shortlisted the names of Ahmed Nawaz Sukhira, Naseer Ahmed Khan and Nasir Saeed Khosa for caretaker chief minister of Punjab, and one of the three names will be finalized soon.
Dissolution of Punjab Assembly
The Punjab Assembly was dissolved on Saturday after Governor Balighur Rehman refused to sign the summary sent to dissolve the Legislative Assembly.
Elahi – who will serve as chief minister until a caretaker government is appointed – sent the summary of the dissolution last week, and according to the constitution, the assembly is dissolved within 48 hours regardless of the governor’s decision.
Rehman, who belonged to the Muslim League (N), avoided the process of dissolution and decided to let the constitution take its course.
He tweeted, “I have decided not to be part of the process of dissolution of Punjab Assembly. I will let the constitution and law take their course.”
After the dissolution, Rehman sent letters to Chief Minister Elahi and Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz to appoint a caretaker government.
