A Juneteenth celebration in the Chicago suburb of Willowbrook turned violent Sunday morning, with at least 23 people shot, one of whom was wounded, authorities said. The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office labeled the event a “peaceful gathering” to commemorate Juneteenth, an important holiday that symbolizes the freedom of enslaved people in the United States. However, the atmosphere suddenly changed when several people in the crowd started discharging firearms.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office revealed that 22 people suffered gunshot wounds, while others were injured trying to flee the scene of chaos. Although law enforcement officers were present at the gathering, they had to temporarily leave due to the disturbance in the surroundings. However, hearing the sound of gunshots, they quickly returned to the scene.
The motive behind the attack was not known and no arrests had been made as of noon. Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Eric Swanson revealed that a number of victims were transported to nearby hospitals, while others sought medical attention on their own. By 10:30 p.m., the parking lot was full with about 300 people, said Rick Wagner, a resident of the area. Wagner also mentioned earlier discussing the issue of large gatherings there with the police.
An eyewitness, Markeshia Avery, confirmed that the event was in fact a June 10th celebration, describing how participants fell to the ground for safety as the shooting began. Another eyewitness, Craig Lutsey, described the chaotic scene, saying that everyone was scattered in panic.
The violent incident cast a deep shadow over what should have been a day of remembrance and reflection. Juneteenth, observed on June 19, commemorates the momentous day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received news of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
