Four children who spent 40 days lost in a Colombian jungle after a plane crash have been released from hospital.
The siblings, Leslie (13), Solini (9), Tyne Norell (5) and baby Christine (1), have miraculously made a full recovery and are now under the care of the Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF). . The children’s father, Manuel Roanoke, expressed his joy at their release, saying, “They have fully recovered, they are in good health. I am very happy.”
The children were the sole survivors of a small plane crash that killed their mother and two other adults. He was found on June 9 and taken to a military hospital in Bogota for medical attention. Despite their initially frail appearance, the children showed no physical effects from their ordeal.
“They’ve recovered … the weight, they’re actually much better,” said Astrid Caceres, director of Colombia’s Family Welfare Institute. He also reported that even the youngest child, Christine, has fully recovered in terms of physical development.
The children’s survival in the dense Amazon rainforest was attributed to their deep knowledge of jungle survival, passed down from generation to generation. Relatives revealed that Leslie’s skills in navigating the forest and identifying edible plants contributed to her survival. “We found the children: miracle, miracle, miracle,” General Pedro Sánchez, who led the search operation, praised the local people and Colombian soldiers involved in the rescue.
After being released from the hospital, the children will stay in a shelter under the temporary custody of ICBF. The aim of the institute is to provide a comfortable environment for the children, allowing them to adjust and recover after their traumatic experience. The Family Welfare Institute of Colombia will also investigate their family background while keeping them in custody for at least six months.
