14 people have died after a residential building collapsed in the northeast region of Brazil.
The tragic incident took place in Janga neighborhood on the outskirts of Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, during heavy rains that engulfed the area. Fresh search efforts confirmed that the missing persons were found dead, raising the death toll to 14.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse, which occurred while many residents were still sleeping. Pernambuco Governor Raquel Lira expressed his condolences and assured the state government’s support to the affected families. “We will leave no stone unturned to help families in need,” he noted.
Rescue teams diligently searched the wreckage, with eight deaths initially reported. However, the death toll rose to 14 after the bodies of a woman and two children were found as the search continued. Firefighters were able to rescue three people — a 65-year-old woman and two teenagers — from the wreckage, though their conditions have not been released.
The three-storey structure, which was closed in 2010 due to the threat of collapse, had been illegally occupied ever since. There have been similar incidents in the past, highlighting the prevalence of shoddy construction and illegal encroachments in poor neighbourhoods.
Building collapses in Brazil are often linked to heavy rains and inadequate infrastructure. Recife, a coastal city of about 1.5 million inhabitants, has recently been struggling with heavy rains, which have exacerbated the poor condition of the structures.
One local resident expressed concerns about the shoddy construction, calling the type of building a “coffin block”. The tragedy has raised awareness of the urgent need for safer housing and stricter regulations.
