ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to appear in person on May 23 in the contempt of court case.

On Tuesday, a four-member bench of the ECP, headed by its member Nisar Durrani, heard the contempt of court case against PTI leaders Fawad Chaudhry, Asad Umar and its chairman Imran Khan.

Former ruling party leaders are accused of using abusive language against the ECP and its chief Sikandar Sultan Raja.

Election Commission member Justice (retd) Ikramullah Chaudhry expressed indignation over PTI chairman’s lawyer’s continuous non-appearance before the bench.

Khan’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry’s assistant told the ECP bench that he appeared on behalf of the latter as he was busy in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) hearing other cases against the PTI chief.

On which ECP member Ikramullah remarked that we will go to Islamabad High Court and listen to him.

“You are taking this case lightly. The case has been pending for so long. At the last hearing, you appeared without a lawyer,” he added.

The ECP member said that earlier they issued bailable warrants but no one appeared before the election body.

Member Durrani asked whether we should issue a non-bailable warrant for Imran Khan today.

However, he adjourned the hearing of the case, summoning the PTI chief to appear before the bench in person on May 23.

Meanwhile, Asad Umar’s lawyer Anwar Mansoor told the ECP bench that his client is in custody and added that the election body’s lawyers had also filed an injunction in the Sindh High Court (SHC) on the matter. Requested.

However, the ECP member said that according to the Supreme Court’s order, the arguments of Omar’s lawyer were required in the case. “You have the last chance to present your arguments on May 23,” the ECP member added on April 18 of the allegations against him.
