Former federal minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Faisal Vawda on Wednesday submitted his resignation to Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani in compliance with the Supreme Court’s verdict in his disqualification case.
Vawda was elected senator in 2018 on a PTI ticket.
On December 9, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) reinstated the former federal minister as a senator after the Supreme Court overturned the lifetime disqualification.
Following the Supreme Court’s verdict, the ECP withdrew its earlier notification declaring the VAWDA seat vacant from Sindh. Nisar Ahmad Khoro of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was elected as a member of the Senate in March this year from the same seat. However, the ECP has withdrawn the notification of Khoro’s victory on 15 March 2022.
Vawda was disqualified by the ECP in February this year in a dual citizenship case. The former PTI leader was elected as a member of the Upper House of Parliament on a PTI ticket in March 2021.
However, as per the Supreme Court’s decision, Vawda had to resign, and the commission had to re-elect another senator to fill the seat vacated by Vawda’s resignation.
In October, PTI Chairman Imran Khan had terminated Vawda’s basic membership for violating party policy.
Decision of the Supreme Court
Last month, the Supreme Court had ruled that the ECP has no power under the Constitution to decide the pre-election disqualification of a legislator.
In its brief four-page order, the Supreme Court set aside the ECP and High Court decisions. It said: “The ECP has no jurisdiction to inquire into and decide the case of disqualification and disqualification of a returning candidate before the election.”
Vawda’s dismissal from PTI
On October 26, VAWDA held a press conference in Islamabad and claimed that the PTI’s long march – which began on October 28 from Lahore – would see bloodshed, death and funerals.
Following his remarks, the party first suspended his membership as he failed to respond to the show-cause notice issued to him on the day of his burnt presser.
PTI took to Twitter to confirm the cancellation of Vawda’s basic membership.
The PTI also said Vawda would not be allowed to hold any party office or represent the party in the media as he had committed “serious breach of discipline by making statements against the party’s policies and guidelines.” Who is.”
