KYIV, Ukraine: A 50-year-old man and his 11-year-old daughter were killed after Russian missiles hit a house in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, authorities said Sunday.
It was Russia’s latest attack on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine as Moscow’s offensive extends into its second year.
“The enemy launched a missile attack on Zaporizhzhia and killed another Ukrainian family,” the head of the State Emergency Service Sergiy Kruk said on social media.
Anatoliy Kurtiev, head of the Zaporizhzhia city council, said the girl died in an ambulance.
Rescue workers pulled the girl’s 46-year-old mother alive from under the rubble.
Her eldest daughter was not at home when the Russians attacked at night, the emergency service said.
Two Russian missiles fell on a residential building, Kartiv said, adding that windows and roofs of dozens of neighboring houses were damaged.
In his evening speech on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the mother was in critical condition in hospital.
“This is how the terrorist state spends this Palm Sunday,” he added.
“Thus Russia isolates itself even more from the world, from humanity.”
The Zaporizhzhia region is one of four Ukrainian provinces that Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed to have annexed last year.
