ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday quashed the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Asad Umar under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO). He ordered to release them immediately.
The court also directed the politician to submit an affidavit not to be a part of violent protests.
On Tuesday, the IHC also ordered the release of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi after he submitted his affidavit that he would refrain from agitating and inciting workers.
However, a few minutes after his release from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, he was arrested again.
Umar was detained under MPO from the IHC premises on May 10, a day after the violence amid nationwide protests against the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan. Within 24 hours of the start of the violent protests, other top PTI leaders were also detained in Islamabad.
Issuing the directions today, IHC Justice Mian Gul Hasan asked Umar to “forget” his political career if he deviates from the agreement.
The court also directed the PTI leader to delete two tweets.
On this, Awan assured the court to comply with the order.
“They will not release you until you hold a press conference [to condemn the May 9 violence],” Justice said.
On this, Awan said that he will not hold a press conference.
The court later asked Umar to submit an affidavit of non-violation of Section 144, recalling that the court had asked Qureshi to do the same.
