Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up his visit to America and started a two-day important trip to Egypt. The visit is significant as it marks the first time in 26 years that an Indian Prime Minister has visited Egypt.
PM Modi’s visit to Egypt is particularly special as it was extended as a “state visit” following the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during India’s Republic Day celebrations earlier this year, where PM Modi was honored as the “Chief Guest” of honour. “This visit is a momentous occasion, the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Egypt in 26 years since 1997.

During his stay in Egypt, PM Modi held bilateral talks with Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli and President Al-Sisi on Sunday. As part of his trip, he set aside about half an hour to visit Al-Hakim Mosque, a historic and famous mosque in Cairo named after the 16th Fatimid Caliph, Al-Hakim bin Amrullah (985-1021). On his arrival at Cairo International Airport, PM Modi received a warm hug from Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly, a sign of the special honor conferred on him. The Indian community in Cairo also gave Prime Minister Modi a hearty welcome on his arrival at the hotel, waving Indian flags and chanting “Modi Modi”.
The excitement of the Indian diaspora was palpable as they gathered at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Cairo to welcome Prime Minister Modi. The crowd showed their love and appreciation by singing Indian songs including the famous Hindi track “Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Zaban” from the Bollywood film ‘Shaale’.
