The Islamabad High Court (IHC) while resolving the long-standing dispute related to local body elections in the federal capital, has decided that elections will be held in 125 Union Councils (UCs) in the next 120 days.
The court has also said that the federal government will be prohibited from increasing the number of UCIs before the next elections.
This decision was made in response to the intra-court appeals filed against the original decision regarding the elections in Islamabad.
This order will come as a relief to the citizens of the city, who are eagerly waiting for the holding of LG elections after a gap of many years.
The court’s decision was based on a review of the evidence presented in the case, which included testimony from representatives of various political parties and civil society groups.
The court ultimately concluded that the best course of action was to go ahead with the previously scheduled local body elections, which would be held in 125 UCs in Islamabad.
The order also includes a provision prohibiting the federal government from extending UCs again before the next elections.
After the verdict, the IHC disposed of the intra-court appeals, ending the months-long legal battle.
