LAHORE: The Lahore High Court granted protective bail to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shehbaz Gul till January 24 and asked the public prosecutor for details of the cases registered against him.

In his petition, the PTI leader requested the court to provide him with the details of the cases registered against him.

Lahore High Court Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh heard the case. When asked, the lawyer of the federal government told the court that no case has been registered against the PTI leader in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

A case, however, had been registered against Gill but it was taking time to provide details, the lawyer quoted the prosecutor as saying.

Meanwhile, the court directed the Deputy Attorney General to provide details of the cases filed against Gill by Monday and granted the PTI leader’s protective bail against a surety bond of Rs 5,000.

Gill is already facing treason charges and in this regard, earlier today, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) rejected the PTI leader’s plea seeking an indictment in the treason case filed against him. A stay of offense was requested.

The PTI leader was detained on August 9 from Bani Gala Chowk for allegedly inciting public revolt against the ranks and files of the Pakistan Army during a TV programme.

He was booked in August for treason and recovery of arms and remained in custody for over a month. However, he was granted bail by the IHC in the treason case on September 15 after repeatedly seeking release.

A case against Gill has been registered at Kohsar police station under sections 124-A (sedition), 505 (statements inciting public disorder) and the Pakistan Penal Code.

The PTI had insisted on seeking bail for the party leader while he was behind bars, alleging that he faced humiliation, torture and sexual assault in police custody.

It should be noted that the hearing of the sedition case will begin tomorrow after the court indicted the PTI leader. However, the government has appointed special prosecutor Raja Rizwan Abbasi instead of conducting the trial through the public prosecutor.

It may be noted that a district and sessions court in Islamabad had adjourned the indictment proceedings against Gill till January 20, as he had appeared with oxygen support during the hearing on January 6.
